B-25s and other Allied aircraft at Karachi's airport during WWII. The site developed around the huge hangar built for British imperial airships which never arrived. Civil aircraft moved here from nearby RAF Drigh Road, now PAF Faisal, during the 1930s.

Hard to be sure of the serial of this aircraft but a different angle shows "01" were the last two numbers of the serial on the fuselage while the first number on the rudder appears to be "4". F4401 was operated by 20 Sqn in what was then known at the North West Frontier of India. There are two Shinki bridges, Upper and Lower. The Upper Shinki is the one that was known simply as Shinki at the time. While there is now a modern bridge, an old bridge of similar construction to the one in the photo still stands nearby. The Miranshah RAF base used by 20 Sqn was 30km to the west.

Festooned with lights and tinsel as a centrepiece to Christmas celebration, this F2B was a World War I production aircraft rebuilt for use by the postwar RAF. Where this celebration took place is not known but maybe Karachi (Drigh Road) or Lahore given it is in a building of some substance. The year is unknown too.

Arawali was an RAF airfield in the Kurram Valley on what was then the North-West Frontier of British India. The aircraft in the photo are Westland Wapitis. RAF bases in this part of the country were essentially forts, with high walls to protect airmen and ground crew from snipers and raids.

G-EBKU was the second prototype Moth. Flown to what was then British India by Bernard Leete who then undertook a series of demonstrations and joy flights. Hit wires on landing at Lahore injuring himself and his passenger. G-EBKU written off. This is believed to have occurred at the RAF base as Lahore's first civil airport was still three years in the future. The base, which was taken over by the Pakistan air force, became the main civil airport in 1960.

No date for this incident but the caption states H1428 came to grief during a night flight. Significantly it was the aircraft in which C.W.A. Scott had his first flying lesson when he joined the RAF in 1922. Scott achieved global fame as the winner of the London-to-Melbourne air race in 1934 flying DH-88 Comet G-ACSS. The Bristol was rebuilt as an army cooperation aircraft, issued a new c/n and shipped to India for service on the North-West Frontier.
