JZ was for Netherlands New Guinea and in 1957 KLM subsidiary Kroonduif (crested pigeon) took delivery of three Twin Pins for its operations in this rugged land. The delivery flight from Schiphol, avoiding Indonesian territory, took 14 days. Photo by: Joop van Bilsen / Nationaal Archief

The S.73 was the civil counterpart of the SM.81 Pipistrello bomber. Sabena and ČSA were the only export customers. Seven S.73s were built in Belgium. Italian-built OO-AGP was delivered to Sabena in early 1936 and destroyed at Brussels - Haren during the German invasion in May 1940. She was painted orange on the outbreak of war in September 1939 to signify a neutral airliner, like the Danish Fw 200 Condor, OY-DAM, in the foreground. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Don't shoot please, we are small neutrals! In addition to the large country titles, some neutral airliners received an all-orange paint job after the outbreak of WWII, including OY-DAM which was seized by the British at Shoreham on 9 April 1940, the day the Germans occupied Denmark. It became G-AGAY and DX117, crashing on 12 July 1941. OO-AGZ is a Savoia-Marchetti S.73 of Sabena. DC-3 PH-ALU Uil of KLM was damaged beyond repair here by German bombs on 10 May 1940. It's past five o'clock so the Vertol 107 prototype has probably just returned from its amphibious demonstration on a nearby lake. The same aircraft also visited Europe in 1959. On the rear fuselage it reads: 'Prototype of US Marine HRB-1 - Swedish Hkp4'. The HRB-1 designation was changed into CH-46A. Photo by: Joop van Bilsen / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

KLM's first own aircraft were Fokkers but four DH.9Bs were added in 1921. These converted bombers could carry two passengers. Researcher Herman Dekker notes that construction number H9187 is unconfirmed. The aircraft might be ex G-EAUQ (H9125) instead of G-EAUO (H9187). Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Massive public attention for the first Soviet jet to land at Schiphol. Unfortunately for the spectators, Captain Pyotr Soldatev did not need to deploy his three brake chutes. CCCP-L5442 crashed barely a month later in the Russian Far East and all 64 people on board lost their lives. Photo by: Harry Pot / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

'Three seaplanes from De Mok air station landed on the Amstel River near the gasworks [former Zuidergasfabriek] this morning. It was not an emergency, the aeroplane pilots very calmly taxied to the Amstel Bridge before turning back. It was just a routine exercise. After cruising around for half an hour, they took off again near the Amstellaan [now Vrijheidslaan, bridge there built in 1932] and flew to Schellingwoude naval air station.'
