The S.73 was the civil counterpart of the SM.81 Pipistrello bomber. Sabena and ČSA were the only export customers. Seven S.73s were built in Belgium. Italian-built OO-AGP was delivered to Sabena in early 1936 and destroyed at Brussels - Haren during the German invasion in May 1940. She was painted orange on the outbreak of war in September 1939 to signify a neutral airliner, like the Danish Fw 200 Condor, OY-DAM, in the foreground. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Don't shoot please, we are small neutrals! In addition to the large country titles, some neutral airliners received an all-orange paint job after the outbreak of WWII, including OY-DAM which was seized by the British at Shoreham on 9 April 1940, the day the Germans occupied Denmark. It became G-AGAY and DX117, crashing on 12 July 1941. OO-AGZ is a Savoia-Marchetti S.73 of Sabena. DC-3 PH-ALU Uil of KLM was damaged beyond repair here by German bombs on 10 May 1940. KLM's first own aircraft were Fokkers but four DH.9Bs were added in 1921. These converted bombers could carry two passengers. 'Three seaplanes from De Mok air station landed on the Amstel River near the gasworks [former Zuidergasfabriek] this morning. It was not an emergency, the aeroplane pilots very calmly taxied to the Amstel Bridge before turning back. It was just a routine exercise. After cruising around for half an hour, they took off again near the Amstellaan [now Vrijheidslaan, bridge there built in 1932] and flew to Schellingwoude naval air station.'
