Imported into Australia by merchant Lebbeus Horden. The pilot is Maurice Guillaux who would two months later fly the first air mail from Melbourne to Sydney in a Bleriot. In September 1914, Horden donated the Farman to the Australian Government. It was given the serial CFS7 (Central Flying School) and later converted to a landplane. Its existence was last recorded in June 1917. In 1914 there was no water airport at Rose Bay. It would be the 1930s before Qantas chose the sheltered bay as the terminus for its flying boat services.

NC777 on its second visit to Rose Bay (the first was in November 1938). Qantas installed extra fuel tanks so the aircraft, owned by Dr Richard Archbold, could be used to survey an Indian Ocean air route for the Australian government. In June it island hopped from Port Hedland to Mombasa in Kenya. Guba returned to the US where it was sold to the British Puchasing Commission for use by BOAC. Sunk at its moorings at Pwellheli, Wales, in 1945. The hangar in the photo was for Qantas and completed in October 1939. Demolished after flying boat operations ended at Rose Bay in the 1970s.

The departure of Ansett's flying boats marked the end of an era, not just for aviation but Sydney as well. It happened as Sydney was giving up its easy-living Australian lifestyle for the hectic pace of a world city. Photographer's name not known.

Sydney Seaplanes' new million-dollar passenger terminal and cafe at Rose Bay. It's a big improvement on the old fibro shack they used for many years. This building stands on the site of the original 1938 Control Building and passenger terminal, built for the Empire flying boats of the Empire Air Mail Scheme and used until the 1970s. Such history!
