Built for the US Army as L-23B c/n LH-84 53-6181. Remanufactured as RL-23D c/n RLH-32 57-6060. Redesignated as an RU-8D in 1962. To the Detroit Institute of Aeronautics as N201GB by 1981. Front fuselage to the Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology, Canton, MI.

Carried Georgia Air Guard titles on the right side as seen here, but on the left side it had Detroit Institute of Aeronautics titles. On 9 October 1986 this aircraft was flown from here to McChord Air Force Base near Seattle, WA, where it was placed on static display. This was the last flight of a C-124 worldwide.

In Georgia ANG colors. Owned by the Detroit Institute of Aeronautics, and officially registered to them as N86599 on 6 June 1973, but registration not applied. This aircraft made the last flight by a C-124 worldwide when it was flown to the McChord Museum in Washington on October 9, 1986. The Beech 18 in front is N80152 c/n A-112.

Seen in the compound of the Detroit Institute of Aeronautics together with OV-10 N718NA, Bell 47G 0-13958, a Beech C-45 and a Cessna 337. The C-124 was officially registered to the Detroit Institute of Aeronautics as N86599 on 6 June 1973, but the registration was not applied. It flew again in 1986 and was the last of the type to fly.
