The age of the mono-mailplane! On the right is a Northrop Alpha 4A, NC933Y, with Quality Hill in Kansas City in the background. NC12283 was delivered to TWA in May 1933. In 1935, after an accident, the Babb company rebuilt it, against the manufacturer's advice, with a Lockheed Explorer wing for Wiley Post. The hybrid, NR12283, crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska on 15 August 1935, taking the lives of Post and actor Will Rogers. Photo from: Jackson County Historical Society

The Wedell-Williams 44 was a successful racing aircraft of the early 1930s. NR536V was piloted by both Jim Haizlip and his wife May, then the fastest woman in the world. They were based in St Louis where the photo should have been taken. The other Model 44 is NR61Y/121, the Gilmore Red Lion of Roscoe Turner. Gulfstream ship No 97 spent the first seven years of its service life as the only G-II ever registered in Italy - as I-SMEG with VIP-AIR. Twenty years later, as N930SD, it belonged to the Philadelphia Eagles Football Club, seen here with modified nose cone, but still without winglets. - In 2018, the bizjet was noted as XB-ORW at Queretaro, Mexico, in good condition.

K25 slide scan. Built 1968 for North Central, merged into Republic 1979, merged into Northwest 1986. Withdrawn Marana 2004 and scrapped. Taking over Republic in 1986 Northwest became a major DC-9 operator. Many received a basic grey finish instead of the polished metal.

A few years later, N122M was seen at Kalittas base at Detroit - Willow Run, probably used as a source of spares. The derelict fuselage was seen at Davis Monthan in 2002, and at El Mirage CA in 2004. Finally, the tail section became part of a sculpture of several Learjets - an art project that was displayed even in Europe!
