No doubt, the pilot is Harold S Johnson of Illinois, the 'King of Fords'. Check out online videos to admire his really impressive Tri-Motor aerobatics. William Stout's airline started commercial flights from Detroit to Grand Rapids on 31 July 1926, operating as Detroit-Grand Rapids Airline. We are assuming that Miss Grand Rapids, wearing fleet number 1, is Maiden Dearborn I opportunistically renamed, but this requires confirmation. Grand Rapids was Furniture City and here we see the 'first shipment of furniture by air' - presumably also the last. Rebuilt as R4D-8 12443 from c/n 9756 in 1952. Redesignated as a R4D-8T in 1961, a TC-117D in 1962 and a C-117D in 1968. Stored at Davis-Monthan AFB with park code 6C016 in 1971. Registered as N5597T in 1980 then N873SN in 1984 and RP-C473 in 1990, Crashed into a rice field at Santa Rosa, Philippines after hitting power lines.

18 May '44: TOS USAAF with s/n 43-4899. 7/44: 42nd BG in the Philippines; assigned to replacement pool; never saw combat. 11/44: Returned to USA. Ca.12/44: Converted to TB-25H. 2/46: SOC. 1946 to 1953: 6 different owners as N37L. 1953: Modified as an executive aircraft and fitted with wingtip tanks. 1/56: Added air stair door and equipped with JATO. 5 more owners until 1970. 4 Dec '70: Inflight fire during a drug run, damaged in forced landing at Simons Island. Glynn County, GA, Sheriff seized the plane; kept it for over six years until it was sold. 2/80: Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum. Restored for static display '88-'90.
