Must be the sexiest jetliner ever, bar Concorde. My good friend Steve Piercey, the Propliner guru who would never normally look at jets, used to refer to the CV-990 as an honorary propliner

Seen here pulling away from Heathrow's 28R, this is one of the Vanguards that didn't go on to enjoy a new life as a Merchantman . A fraction of a second later to clear the tail marks would have been nice, but still the best shot of the very few I have of BEA's classic red box scheme

Whilst driving in the Caucasus Mountains about an hour up from Sochi, we found this Kamov in a field full of cattle by the roadside. A chat with the crew determined that they were waiting for the weather to improve before ferrying down to the airport. Seen here departing after dropping five lucky guys, including me, off after an impromptu ride around the local area

When doing some research about this U-2, I was astonished to find I'd seen the very same aircraft just two days before as it is the one suspended in the American Air Museum at Duxford. Now painted in the standard black, the white colours here can be attributed to the fact that the 9th SRW were flying it as a crew trainer. Note the double cockpit (which has now been modified back to single to represent the standard spyplane)

This 748 spent 2 years in Nigeria from 1986 and was no stranger to Africa having been delivered from new to Cameroon in 1977. Damaged beyond repair during 1998 while operated by Wasaya at a small airfield in Ontario

A busy pier on a dull day at MAN with five classic types and an excellent opportunity to compare the noses of the Caravelle and Comet. It is often mentioned that Sud-Est used the Comet nose when designing the SE.210. Indeed there was co-operation leading to the noses of the first two prototypes being direct copies and those thereafter very similar including cockpit layout

This Phantom started out as a regular F-4D but was converted to YF-4E for trials when the E variant was under development. It was serving with the Air Force Flight Test Center at the time of this photo and remains at Edwards today, in that unit's museum

The Lightning never really looked its best in camo so here is a well-known example in its original 11 Sqdn colours. XR724 was later allocated to BAe at Warton as chase aircraft in Tornado radar development trials and was then flown into storage at Shawbury. Tendered the by MoD in 1991, it was purchased by the Lightning Association and flown to Binbrook on 23.7.92 where attempts to restore the airframe and keep it in running condition have been frustrated by the disposal of the airfield and accommodation issues

Seen here with 617 Sqdn's distinctive dam-buster insignia, XL425 was built as a B.2 Blue Steel and delivered to 83 Sqdn at Scampton on 30.8.62. She was converted to 'free-fall' in 1970 and allocated to 617 in 11.72, 27 Sqdn in 11.73, and back to 617 in 4.74, finally meeting the scrapper's axe at Scampton in 6.82

Another shot of Blue Angels ship '6' - this time plus '5', which was Bu Aer 153876 (c/n 2450) - lost 7.8.73 during airshow at Lake Charles, LA. Pilot ejected safely, but shortly after the Blue Angels transitioned to the more manageable A-4. Look at the serial numbers - they happened to be almost a mirror image too! It may appear like a Photoshop clone job, but I can assure everyone it's straight from the slide. Quite a performance for big heavy jets
