The Rhönadler was designed for Schleicher by Hans Jacobs and first flew in 1932. It became the first series-built high-performance glider in the world. Schleicher built 65 in total and an unknown number were built by gliding clubs and individuals. The last one built is the one shown here, built by Klaus Heyn from 1983 to 1986. It went to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe painted to commemorate D-GÜNTHER GROENHOFF from the 1930s.

D-5555 was the second prototype and was built in 1954. In 1978 it was handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe.

After the cancellation of the E-8B contract, it was converted to freighter configuration in Jun-1992, registered N707UM in Aug-1993, serving as a hack, support and testbed aircraft. This registrration was cancelled Feb-2001 and it was converted to a RE-3B and delivered to the Saudi Arabian AF as 1902. Note here the CFM56 engines.
