Withdrawn from use in 1963. This was around the time Australia grounded Geminis over concerns about deterioration of the glues used in their construction. A story circulated NZ that a Gemini had crashed in Australia due to termite damage. This was not true. The accident that sparked the Australian grounding of several wooden aircraft, including the widely used Anson, involved a Proctor V but no termites. Glue in the wing had failed. Veha Akat was a 'French' airline operating in Laos. F-LAAN and sister aircraft F-LAAM (c/n 989) were delivered in January 1957, shortly before this photo was taken. Owner then listed as Compagnie Laotienne de Commerce et de Transport (CLCT) but this was changed to Societé Veha Akat in 1959. Certificates of airworthiness suspended in October 1961 and April 1961, respectively. Both aircraft listed as written off on 2 April 1970. Photo by: Joel Halpern / University of Wisconsin-Madison

Still without jet pods here, this Provider was converted to C-123K standard in the spring of 1969 and returned to USAF service as 54-671. To Laotian air force in 1972, and to Thai air force in 1975. Previously 58-7026, this Helio received the Taiwanese civil registration B-835 in 1960. To B-865 after repairs in 1962. To XW-PGB in 1969. Serving with Air Asia and Air America in Laos and Vietnam, it survived numerous crashes and accidents, including a drop 'from a high altitude' by a Chinook in 1967 after an emergency landing made by the pilot who took this photo - 'probably at Tan Son Nhut'. Sold to Philippines in 1974. Photo by: Robert L Wofford / University of Wisconsin-Madison
