This is 301Sq-F4EJ No. 318, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on February 22, 2001. All F4EJs from the fighter unit were retired in March 2001. As a result, from then on, all of JASDF's F4 fighter aircraft were F4EJ Kai. Therefore, this photo is my last shot of it. The F4EJ continued to fly as a test aircraft at Gifu Air Base until March 2021.

This photograph was taken at Nyutabaru Air Base on November 22, 1999, and shows RF4EJ No. 392 of the 501st Sq belonging to Hyakuri Air Base. The Woodpecker bow tie, the unit markings of this aircraft, was blue. Normally, this color is yellow, but around 1999, there were also RF4 aircraft that were blue. It seems that painting them in different colors showed the enthusiasm of each aircraft maintenance unit.

Ahead of the 1999 JSDF Combat Skills Competition, the shark-mouth paintwork began on the aircraft to boost morale. On this day, it was still incomplete. In the background of this photo, you can see a row of F4EJ Kais from the 302nd SQ, which had flown in from Naha Air Base on Okinawa Island for pre-competition training ahead of the competition.

This is a close-up of the nose of F4EJ No. 371, belonging to the 301st Fighter Squadron based at Nyutabaru Air Base, photographed at the JASDF Tsuiki Air Base Air Show on November 18, 1990. This aircraft took part in the 1990 JASDF combat competition, and was painted in this manner to boost morale. It appears to have been a gun shooting competition, as the shark's mouth painted on the nose is holding a dart target in its mouth, with many bullet holes painted on the target.

This photo was taken at Nyutabaru Air Base on November 22, 1999, and shows 501Sq-RF4EJ No. 335 belonging to Hyakuri Air Base. It's hard to see in the shadows, but although this aircraft is a reconnaissance aircraft, you can see that it has Sidewinders (dummy munitions) attached under the wings. This is because the F4EJ has been converted into a reconnaissance aircraft. Incidentally, the Woodpecker bow tie that is the unit markings on this aircraft is blue. Normally, this color is yellow, but around 1999, there were also RF4 aircraft that had this color in blue.

This photograph of F4EJ No. 336 fitted with a missile target (RMK-19A/A47U-3) from the 301st SQ of Nyutabaru Air Base was taken at JASDF Tsuiki Air Base on July 7, 1999. Because the F4EJ could be fitted with targets for missile firing and dart targets for gun firing, it was moved to other bases to support training. All F4EJs in combat units were retired in March 2001. As a result, since then, all JASDF F4 fighter aircraft have been F4EJ Kai. This is an F4EJ Kai of the 301st SQ based at Nyutabaru Air Base, painted for the 1992 JASDF Combat Skills Competition, with six aircraft given special paint jobs. The camouflage paintwork on these 301SQ aircraft was a gray cloud pattern to accommodate the cloudy airspace, as the JASDF Combat Skill Competition was held during Japan's long rainy season. The cloud pattern air superiority camouflage on each aircraft varied in its paint pattern. The first to be painted, and the one that was most faithful to the original pattern, was No. 437.
