This is 301Sq-F4EJ No. 318, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on February 22, 2001. All F4EJs from the fighter unit were retired in March 2001. As a result, from then on, all of JASDF's F4 fighter aircraft were F4EJ Kai. Therefore, this photo is my last shot of it. The F4EJ continued to fly as a test aircraft at Gifu Air Base until March 2021.

The Woodpecker bow tie, the unit markings of this aircraft, was blue. Normally, this color is yellow, but around 1999, there were also RF4 aircraft that were blue. It seems that painting them in different colors showed the enthusiasm of each aircraft maintenance unit.

It appears to have been a gun shooting competition, as the shark's mouth painted on the nose is holding a dart target in its mouth, with many bullet holes painted on the target.

This is an F4EJ Kai of the 301st SQ based at Nyutabaru Air Base, painted for the 1992 JASDF Combat Skills Competition, with six aircraft given special paint jobs. The camouflage paintwork on these 301SQ aircraft was a gray cloud pattern to accommodate the cloudy airspace, as the JASDF Combat Skill Competition was held during Japan's long rainy season. This is an F4EJ Kai of the 301st SQ based at Nyutabaru Air Base, painted for the 1992 JASDF Combat Skills Competition, with six aircraft given special paint jobs. The camouflage paintwork on these 301SQ aircraft was a gray cloud pattern to accommodate the cloudy airspace, as the JASDF Combat Skill Competition was held during Japan's long rainy season. The cloud pattern air superiority camouflage on each aircraft varied in its paint pattern. The first to be painted, and the one that was most faithful to the original pattern, was No. 437.
