'Superb' by name, superb by nature. One of my favourite aircraft, now preserved just a couple of miles from where I then lived - great memories of some rides LHR-BRU around the time of this shot, then of seeing her arrive on the shortened runway at Brooklands for the museum on 17.10.96 (lamp posts were temporarily removed specially from the road outside) - the last ever flight of a Vanguard

I was lucky enough to get a couple of memorable rides up front in sister-ship "Superb" before she was retired to Brooklands, where the nose section of G-APEJ is also preserved. The nose of this aircraft 'Echo Sierra' is preserved at East Midlands

The one-time VH-ECA and TI-LRM was acquired by Servicios de Transportes Aereos Fueginos SA of Buenos Aires in 11.86, taking up French overseas registration in 2.87. Became Air Atlantique's first Electra, G-LOFA, in 11.93. Suffered extensive damage on 30.7.96 en route SXF-CGN when explosive decompression opened cargo door in flight. Emergency return to Berlin-Schönefeld, aircraft repaired and returned to service till 1998 when major overhaul needs found to be uneconomic. B/u Coventry 10.02

Delivered to Northwest as N129US in 12.59 and later N777DP, PT-DZK, N8LG and N360Q; leased by TPI to ABC in 6.89 and was the only Electra ever to carry these full colours - painted shortly before this photo and boy didn't she look smart. Reverted to N360Q with JBQ in 12.92 and later leased to Hunting and Channel Express. Bought by Air Spray in 1.03 as C-GYVI, wfu at Red Deer by late 2007 and stripped of all useful parts

"Dreadnought" was delivered new to BEA as a Vanguard in September 1961. Converted to Merchantman cargo in February 1970 and sold to Air Bridge in November 1979. Withdrawn at Perpignan and scrapped in 1990.

"Agamemnon" on finals to Ringway's Runway 24 when operating freight flight ABR251 from Amsterdam on behalf of KLM.
