Slide taken during flight operations aboard USS Midway (CV-41). A-7A 153191 was accepted by the USN on 16 June 1967. It was lost in the Sea of Japan on 30 March 1977. A catapult malfunction resulted in not enough airspeed to get airborne. The pilot ejected as the aircraft reached the end of the flight deck. The ejection seat also malfunctioned and did not separate the pilot from the seat and unfortunately the pilot was lost.

Returning to USS Midway (CV-41) which was operating off the coast of Luzon in the South China Sea with the sun beginning to set down low. I took this slide from another VA-93 A-7A. This A-7A was assigned to VA-93 from April 1973 through late April 1977. Both VA-93 and VA-56 (also aboard CV-41) were the last two active duty A-7 squadrons to operate the A-7A. By late May 1976 this A-7A was in storage at MASDC. It was later given a new life as an A-7P with the Portuguese Air Force as 5539, finally retiring for good in 1990.

This A-7A was lost on 6 October 1975 off Okinawa due to engine failure. The pilot had a successful ejection and was rescued by helicopter from the ship. In July 1975 the USS Hancock (CV-19) was undergoing repair at Naval Station Subic Bay. Carrier Air Wing 21 was assigned to the Hancock, and in order to maintain their carrier qualifications CVW-21 used Midway's flight deck for a couple of days. The A-4F Bureau Number 155022 "Lady Jessie" of VA-164 was the last A-4 to carry that name as the squadron was disestablished in late 1975.

A VA-93 A-7A over the South China Sea. I took this slide from another VA-93 A-7A. Note the speed brake under the fuselage is not completely flush, which is not normal. VA-93 was conducting operations from USS Midway (CV-41) during this period. 153140 was assigned to VA-93 from 1973 through 24 April 1977. Retired to MASDC on 27 May 1977. This A-7A is loaded out with six live 1000 lb. Mk.83 bombs (three under each wing). This was a good load configuration for the A-7, as it was lower drag than having them mounted on multiple ejector racks (MERs). 152669 arrived at MASDC on 26 May 1977. It was used as a parts airframe for the Portuguese A-7P program. After that it was evidently sold surplus, and at last report was at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation in Sevierville, TN. awaiting restoration.

This A-7A is loaded out with two live 2000 lb. Mk.84 bombs (one under each wing). VA-93 and VA-56, both aboard USS Midway, were the last two fleet A-7A squadrons (the Navy Reserve still had A-7As for a little while longer). On April 24th, three days after I took this slide, both squadrons flew off all the A-7As to NAS Cubi Point for return to the U.S. by ship. 153228 arrived at MASDC on 27 May 1977. It was later converted to an A-7P for the Portuguese AF with s/n 5517 (later 15517). Its flying days finally ended in 1994 and it was scrapped.

Good view of the Douglas/Sargent Fletcher D-704 inflight refueling buddy store. The nose propeller powers the internal hydraulic pump used for extending and retracting the hose as well as powering the fuel transfer pump. The buddy store also has a 300 U.S. gallon fuel tank in the center between the prop/hydraulic pump area in the front and the hose reel area at the rear.
