This is the only surviving reconnaissance version of the B-36 and was assigned to the 28th SRW at Rapid City AFB, SD (Ellsworth AFB after June 1953) from 1952 to 1957. In 1957, it was reassigned to Chanute Air Force Base, IL, and was used as a ground instructional airframe. After retirement, it was placed on display at the Chanute Aerospace Museum but now resides at the superb Castle Air Museum.

During WWII, the USAAF accepted 3,144 C-46s (1,410 were C-46Ds) for hauling cargo and personnel and for towing gliders. This C-46D was retired from USAF service in Panama in 1968 and is now on display at the national Museum of the USAF as an aircraft flying the 'Hump', transporting war materials over the Himalayas from India to China after the Japanese had closed the Burma Road.

Reports of her demise have been somewhat exaggerated...but not for long... unfortunately for this beautiful old aircraft her date with the axeman will not be delayed for long. In the background a couple of ex-KLM 737s are being broken up and the Spanair 321 EC-HQZ is next in the queue.

The enormous B-36 was originally designed to bomb Nazi Germany from Newfoundland if necessary. Four auxiliary jet engines were added to the production aircraft which, though still slow, fulfilled an important role until the advent of the B-52.
