Very interesting event, the crew asked people to stand back, we did, they started up and lifted from 'among us' to go on a brief flight. Quite a downdraft. Photo taken with a short 35mm to 70mm zoom lens.

On 1 January 1945 Lancaster DP377 'WS-U' was involved on a dawn attack on the Dortmund-Ems canal, when the bomber was badly hit by two shells, setting the aircraft ablaze. FS Thompson noticed the mid-upper gunner on fire and helped him to a safe place. Badly burned himself, he went to drag the rear-gunner, also ablaze, to a safe space. The aircraft crash landed and the crew were taken to hospital. Thompson started to recover, but developed pneumonia and passed away. Two weeks later he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, now proudly commemorated on the tail of this 9 Sqn Typhoon FGR4.

Recently, the remaining 14 CP-140 went through the Block IV upgrade and the most visible modification is the large Wideband Global SATCOM radome on top of the fuselage. 140111 operated from RAF Lossiemouth for a while in May this year.

Built in 1966. Seen here with 237 OCU, landing back home at RAF Lossiemouth, which had been its shore base in service with the Royal Navy at the outset of its career. Carries a couple of "zaps", stickers or stencils applied surreptitiously by host staff in a spirit of friendly rivalry when visiting the bases of other Air Forces: one may be Belgian, the other is certainly Italian. Scrapped at Shawbury in 1994, but the forward fuselage survived as a museum piece well into the 21st century in the Netherlands, still with its zaps.
