Designed as a heavy bomber, the F.60 Goliath with its bus-like fuselage was easily transformed into an important early airliner, seating up to twelve passengers. The second prototype, painted green, departed Paris in the morning of 12 August 1919 and landed at Soesterberg 3.5 hours later, bound for Copenhagen. As F-GEAD this plane was involved in the world's first mid-air collision between airliners, with DH.18A G-EAWO over Picardie on 7 April 1922. All seven people on board the two planes lost their lives. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The Curtiss Falcon biplane family included the O-1, O-11 and A-3 of the US Army and the naval F8C / OC /O2C. The Falcon Mailplane was normally a single-seater but is seen here being demonstrated to the Dutch military as a two-seater. Several Curtiss planes were demonstrated at Rotterdam on 8 July 1930 and this visit to Soesterberg likely took place in the same month. The Curtiss Hawk fighter was selling to the Netherlands East Indies army which felt that it was much more reliable than the Fokker biplanes, and the Falcon does look sturdier than the Fokker C.V 320, on the right. Helicopter designed by Dutch engineer Albert Gillis von Baumhauer. A short first flight was made on 5 September 1925 and a more substantial one on 10 February 1926. The vehicle featured a tail rotor, powered by its own engine, but lacking pitch control. Slow progress was made until the helicopter crashed on 29 August 1930. By then working for the Dutch CAA, Von Baumhauer was killed in the crash of Boeing Stratoliner NX19901 on 18 March 1939. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen (Flushing) took over the aircraft building branch of the Pander furniture factory, and in 1935 Theo Slot designed the Scheldemusch (Scheldt Sparrow) light single-seat sport aircraft. It flew well but the six examples built remained unsold. In June 1937 this one was demonstrated to the military at Soesterberg who were interested mainly in the triciycle landing gear. First flown in mid-1935, the Weihe (harrier) was a mainly a crew trainer of which 1670 examples were built for the Luftwaffe and quite a few export customers. D-OQYT, which also carried the paramilitary registration WL-OQYT, is seen being demonstrated here to the Dutch army air arm which did order five Fw 58s. This Starfighter used to be part of the collection of the former Militaire Luchtvaart Museum (MLM) at Kamp Zeist, and was displayed on a pole along the entrance road to that museum. The museum closed in June 2013 and the inventory was transferred to the collection of the new Nationaal Militair Museum (NMM). This F-104 was recently placed on display as seen here, on an abandoned taxi track at the long closed Soesterberg Air Base, on the west side of road N413, about 200m from the entrance road to the museum.
