On 26 September 1998, NAS Dallas was decommissioned and units were transferred to NAS JRB Fort Worth, the former Carswell AFB. NAS Dallas had several Skyhawks in service, assigned to the Operations Maintenance Detachment (OMD) in an adversary role, mainly in support of the Naval Air Reserve. The Skyhawks were instrumental in training and development of Air Combat Manoeuvring (ACM) for the NAS Dallas based VF-201 and VF-202, both Tomcat squadrons.

This C-9B was once registered as N507MD. It flew from NAS Atlanta (GA) with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 46 "Eagles". The C-9B was phased out from US Navy service and arrived ar AMARC on 1 May 2002. Nice to know... In February 1985, the last piston driven C-118 Liftmaster in military service was retired by VR-46 as the squadron transitioned to the C-9B. VR-46 was sadly disestablished on 30 September 2012.

Fighter Squadron (VF) 201 "Hunters" of the United States Navy Reserves operated factory-new Tomcats, but the squadron received (after transition from the F-4S) also very old Tomcats, like this 33rd built 158632. AF-104 of Fighter Squadron (VF) 201 Hunters on its way to the runway of NAS Dallas (TX). On this September 1987 day, the squadron performed some Dissimilar air combat training (DACT) with Tyndall F-15s that were deployed to Dallas. The pilot of one of the Tomcat said the memorable words to me before he entered his office: "Today we're gonna eat some Eagles" in a Texas slang. This BuNo 162708 crashed on 23 December 1993 during an Air Combat Manoeuvring engagement with an A-4 Skyhawk, some 30 miles SW of Dallas.

Marine Attack Squadron (All Weather) 533 'Hawks' operated the A-6 Intruder since 1965. Soon after the transition to the Intruder the squadron was deployed to Vietnam to support combat operations. In 1975 they returned to Continental US where they were based at MCAS Cherry Point (NC). In 1976, the A-6A was replaced by the more modern A-6E. With that aircraft the Hawks deployed for another combat tour, this time to the Gulf War in 1990. In 1992 the A-6E was replaced by the F/A-18D.
