During WWI it was mainly used as a production centre for German military aircraft and in WWII as a main Luftwaffe training base. Post-war, Altenburg-Nobitz was used as a fighter base by the Soviet Air Force with one of the remaining blister aircraft shelters visible here. After closure of the base, the airfield was marketed as Leipzig-Altenburg and a small terminal was constructed. However, Ryanair withdrew in 2011 and the building is now used only by the local parachute club.
