One of two airship sheds at the former RAF Cardington, built in 1916 as part of the UK's airship project. Each is 812 ft long, 180 ft wide and 157 ft high and contains 4000 tons of steel. It was from here that the R101 left on her ill fated voyage to India, only to crash at Bauvais in France in October 1930. This resulted in the dismantling of sister ship R100 and the end of the airship programme.

North Luffenham opened in December 1940 as a training airfield, mainly with Tiger Moths though later Avro Manchesters and Wellingtons were based there. The concrete runways seen here were constructed in 1943 after which it was used by DC3s and heavy gliders such as Horsas and Hamilcars. It is now and Army base. In the top left two Austers, a J1N G-AJYB and Mark 3 G-BUDL can be seen awaiting our joining them in Auster AOP 9 G-AVHT for an air to air photography session. Man-made Rutland Water can be seen in the background

In the top RH corner are the famous Airship sheds from which the R101 set out on her ill fated maiden voyage to India on October 4th 1930. Cardington has no runway; airships were launched from a field adjacent to the sheds just out of picture.
