North Luffenham opened in December 1940 as a training airfield, mainly with Tiger Moths though later Avro Manchesters and Wellingtons were based there. The concrete runways seen here were constructed in 1943 after which it was used by DC3s and heavy gliders such as Horsas and Hamilcars. It is now and Army base. In the top left two Austers, a J1N G-AJYB and Mark 3 G-BUDL can be seen awaiting our joining them in Auster AOP 9 G-AVHT for an air to air photography session. Man-made Rutland Water can be seen in the background This photo is copyright © Mick Bajcar, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
