Left wing separated during firefighting operations nears Lyons, Colorado, on July 19, 2002. The accident, caused by fatigue, played a major part in the US Forest Service decision to cancel contracts with operators of ageing heavy air tankers.
This is the second Privateer to carry registration N6884C (the first was BuNo 66284, which crashed in June 1959). This aircraft remained at Greybull for many years and eventually became part of the local Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting. It was still there by mid 2016.
