On display in the X-planes hall at NMUSAF, Convair researched the high-speed delta wing in response to a USAF requirement for a supersonic interceptor. Enter the XF-92A, first flown on 18 September 1948. This aircraft helped in development of Convair's F-102 Delta Dagger, F-106 Delta Dart and B-58 Hustler.

In September 1948, the XF-92A became the world's first jet aircraft to fly with the radical delta-wing configuration, pioneered by Germany's Dr Alexander Lippisch. Convair used the knowledge learned from the XF-92 to design the delta-wing F-102, the USAF's first operational supersonic interceptor. Operated by NACA, it made its last flight in October 1953, the nose gear collapsing on landing. It then became a travelling exhibit with the USAF's Recruiting Service, next going on display at Franklin County Airport, TN in 1965. In vandalised condition, it was recovered by the USAFM in 1969

On display in the R&D Gallery at NMUSAF under the XB-70 Valkyrie. Convair researched the high-speed delta wing after World War II. In response to a USAF requirement for a supersonic interceptor, it built prototype XF-92A. The landing gear, engine, canopy and ejection seat were borrowed from other aircraft. First flown on 18 Sep 48, it was tested by Frank Everest, Chuck Yeager and Scott Crossfield. It was under-powered despite engine changes, and Mach 1.01 was obtained on a dive. This aircraft helped in development of Convair's F-102 Delta Dagger, F-106 Delta Dart and B-58 Hustler.

The F-92 fighter was cancelled and the XF-92A was just a rudimentary smaller test aircraft built for delta wing research. Only this airframe, 46-682, was completed. It was re-engined and painted white in 1951. The photo was clearly taken at Convair in San Diego. The B-36 with 11th Bomb Group markings in the background, 44-92085, was accepted by the USAF in January 1950. Photo from: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
