The first U-16 in Spanish AF service came from the USAF in 1954 and formed two SAR units, one covered the area around the Canaries and the other in the Ballearics. The type was finally retired from service in 1979 and replaced in the SAR role by C212 and P-3s. This example is on display at the Museo del Aire.

After being parked up at TUS for many years this Albatross has now turned up in the Western scrapyard bordering DM. Unfortunately it looks like she no longer has long for this Earth.

In the early Sixties this aeroplane flew with the 58th Air Rescue Squadron based at Wheelus AB, Tripoli, Libya. Photographed on a beautiful, warm Arizona evening - such nice memories for me from this trip!

The Albatross which forms part of the superb outdoor collection at the Museo del Aire has recently been moved into a slightly better position for photos, possibly as a result of the Do 24 going indoors for restoration. Still carrying the former US serial, she served Esc 55/801 in the SAR role from Son San Joan airbase, Palma de Majorca. A total of 28 HU-16s were operated by the Spanish from 1954 to 1978

Was operated by Pan Am from 1969 until 1971, under military marks, on a weekly service as PA163 from Mombasa, Kenya to a satellite tracking station at Mahe, Seychelles.
