Wow, such a powerful aircraft! Former RCAF 22111 looks like she's ready to fly out over vast prairies on her way north for another Arctic resupply mission. If only that were still the case... HP badge on the nose, N8093 has been on the register with D&G since August 2000.

On 8 December 2003 this actress left home for a lead role in the remade movie "Flight of the Phoenix". The trip would take her around the Atlantic Ocean, routing to Africa via the Canary Islands and returning in June 2004 via Brazil. She came back with fantasy registration H0180-H and 'XXExpress' titles and logo and was still wearing these in 2005. Temporarily parked in the Greybull museum but ready for duty, this bird was then for sale. [Velvia, F100]

This is one of the last-built Consolidated Cansos, previously known as N314CF. After its military career the aircraft became an aerial firefighter and served in Canada and Spain. Restoration was well under way here with 'blisters' mounted while a multitude of ropes kept the Cat secured. She was restored to flying status eventually by appropriately named Black Cat Aviation in Indiana. [50mm 1/200 f8 on Velvia]

Among many numbers on the nose is the MASDC (now AMARC) code 1P334. Hawkins and Powers acquired the P-2 from there in July 1987 and it was registered with D&G as N173AM at the photo date, a registration linking to its BuNo 143173. The remains of '206' on the nose may be from the end of the sixties and ten years before that 143173 happened to be coded '7' with VP-21, a number now sprayed on the nose wheel door. Nothing fancy here. The USAF serial was brutally painted over and the rudder clamped. Still, part of '0-30265' is readable which stands for 53-265 and this is one of no less than seven Stratotankers at Greybull in July 2005. C-119G N3003/03 is in the background. [Velvia 50, DiMage Scan]

Kept in position by a makeshift tail support and counterweights, being a bunch of selected aircraft parts. A little more fading of the paint that was used to mask the military markings will make this Neptune look again like she did when flying with VP-67. Well, almost.

Remnants of its military ID apart from the obvious BuNo are the MASDC code on the nose wheel door and the faded combination 'LV-3' worn with VP-66 in the first half of the seventies. Bleeding through the faded paint is code '7W' worn at NAS Willow Grove in 1970. Info from Baldur's P-2 pages used with permission - thank you. [F90X, Provia]

Judging by the many patches on the lower fuselage this poor old Herc had been heavily abused for Battle Damage Repair Training or similar activities. The plane was sold by HP early 2005 but remained in Greybull for the time being, while Tanker 124 was watching it from the background. [Nikon F90X, Fuji Provia]

Brought to Greybull by Hawkins and Powers more than a decade before the photo date and probably still there. The large code on the nose goes back to the aircraft's first identity: 53-8076 with the California ANG at Hayward, until withdrawn from use in 1975.

Tanker 139 together with N140HP/140 (cn 7102). These beauties could not have looked better when H&P started operating them in 1990 after overhaul and modifications. Since their contract had been cancelled in May 2004 they were waiting for another smoky start-up. For that, their remaining service life had to be established, a tough and costly operation. Nevertheless, it was successfully completed for this airframe that flew on as Tanker 43, N443NA. [Velvia 50, DiMage Scan]

The flight engineer's head rest provided enough support to take this available light photo of the spacious flight deck of Tanker 131. A classic cockpit designed primarily for visual manoeuvring but of course supporting IFR operations. On summer days like this it gets so hot inside that coming out into the 104°F (40°C) afternoon air feels like a relief. [F90X & DiMage]

Two immaculate Neptunes in eye-catching colors at the Greybull museum. Tanker 139 retained the long tail cone that used to house the MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detection) sensors while Tanker 140 received a short version. There aren't too many of these compact cones and they all seem different in shape. [Nikon F100]
