Test flown as G-2-12 4 February 1966 and delivered to the SAAF's 24 Squadron 17 October 1966 where it served until retired and transferred to the National Museum of Military History 10 May 1992. Between 1987 and 1989 this airframe underwent a major overhaul said to have cost 13 million Rand at the time. There are speculations that this was a modification to make the aircraft capable of delivering South Africa's nuclear weapons. However, the nuclear programme was shelved and the weapons destroyed. During the 1960s, the South African Air Force recognized the requirement for an inshore maritime patrol and fisheries surveillance aircraft. With an already established relationship with Piaggio the P-166 was chosen. Named Albatross in SAAF service, the first was delivered in October 1969; 896 was delivered in March 1974. The fleet was retired in 1992/1993 and replaced by Dakotas, the very aircraft the Albatross was introduced to replace. 896 served with 27 Sqd its entire service life and arrived at the SAAF Museum Ysterplaat in October 1991. When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. Photographer unknown

The SAAF's 7 Sqd was established on 1 April 1939 as an active Citizen Force unit, but remained dormant and disbanded later that year. Re-stablished as a fighter squadron 12 January 1942 flying Curtiss Mohawks. The squadron fought in East and North Africa and took part in the invasion of Italy before returning to South Africa and Ysterplaat remaining in the Cape until finally disbanded 31 December 1994. Here is a line up of the squadrons Harvards at AFB Ysterplaat. 7458 was delivered in 1943 and served with the SAAF until sold in the USA as N7458S in 1997. Photographer unknown

1717 was one of the first two of Shackletons delivered to the SAAF on 18 August 1957, the other was 1716/J. The aircraft were supposed to painted in alphabethcial order starting with 1716 as J and ending with Q on 1723. However, the squadron commander at the time Commandant M J Uys requested that his machine was given the code O as that was his wartime code letter. 1717/O was retired with the rest of the fleet in 1984 and put on display at the Midmar Dam in Natal and later moved to Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal. 1723/Q was in the last batch of three Shackletons handed over to the SAAF 26 February 1958. After retirement she was put on display at Vic's Garage on the Golden Highway in Armadale in Johannesburg. Initially in full SAAF colours. After a while the codes, roundels and fin flash were removed as seen here. Then she was turned into a very red Coca-Cola commercial and later a blue and yellow Sasol promotion. Photographer unknown

Other than the RAF, the SAAF was the only other user of the Avro Shackleton. Eight MR 3s were ordered in 1954 with deliveries in 1957 and 1958. Two were lost in accidents; 1718/K in 1963 and 1716/J in 1994. 1722/P or Pelican P, was delivered 26 February 1958. She served with 35 Sqd until retired in 1984. After the loss of 1716, 1722 was refurbished to flying condition with the SAAF Museum Historical Flight at AFB Ysterplaat. She is now on display at the SAAF Museum Ysterplaat. This Shackleton became famous in 1994. After being withdrawn from use in 1990, it was restored into flying condition and left South Africa for the UK on 12 July 1994 to take part in the air show season. It was flown by active SAAF pilots. En route the aircraft suffered several technical problems and had to make a forced landing in the Western Sahara the following day and was subsequently written off. The aircraft still remains in the desert, slowly being buried under the sand. Photographer unknown

The South African Air Force purchased 12 used Caravans. 3012 was the last delivered on 4 January 1990 entering service with 41 Sqd as ZS-MLR. The Caravan fleet was given military serials after the 1994 elections but retained their civilian colour schemes. With the unification of all armed forces into the South African National Defence Force, the Caravans were given a more unified military look with national insignia and squadron markings.
