It was manufactured entirely at McDonnell's St. Louis plant. JASDF regularly installs dust collection pods on T4 liaison aircraft to sample radioactive materials and other substances over Japan. Around 2020, this T4 liaison aircraft was grounded due to an aircraft malfunction. As a result, an F4EJ from Gifu Air Base, which can be equipped with a dust collection pod, flew to Tsuiki Air Base to carry out this mission.
