First noted with Aeritalia in late 1979, the assigned to the Italian Air Force 46 Brigata Aerea from early 1980. In July 1985, the G222 was seen stored and dismantled at Napoli-Capodichino, but later it was activated again. From September 1999, it was again seen stored and withdrawn from use on cargo ramp at Pisa-San Giusto, thn seen withourt a tail in mid-2012, and destined for the Museo Storico dell'Aeronautica Militare Italiana at Vigna di Valle, but moved as an instructional airframe to the Multinational Aircraft Recovery Training at Villafranca in 2015.

Part of Italian detachment in Incirlik at the end of Gulf War one for Provide Comfort operation. This aircraft suffered damage in June 2002 during IAT Fairford air show when its nose landing gear collapsed after an heavy landing.
