Heading home to Luskintyre after the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's Chippie Rally. This former RAF Chippie, WB710, was de-mobbed in January 1951 and according to some sources went to the Sri Lankan Air Force. In any case it went to Ireland as EI-AJB in 1956 before coming to Australia in 1958 where it became VH-RSM(2) with the Royal Aero Club of NSW. Later re-registered VH-WMT, then VH-WMG. It was restored and re-registered VH-RSM(4) in 1987.

This was the first Chipmunk registered in Australia, being imported for DHA in 1947 as VH-BFT. In 1948 it was loaned to the RAAF and the following year sold to the Newcastle Aero Club. Re-reg VH-RNG when the Club got the prefix 'Royal' in 1953. In 1959 re-reg to VH-BBF, then VH-MCC a few months later. Withdrawn for rebuild 1994 - first post-restoration flight on 15 Dec 2010. Tocumwal was once the largest aerodrome in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in record time in the dark days of February 1942 as a USAAF bomber base for the inland defence of Australia and named McIntyre Field, it originally covered 8 square miles. Taken over by the RAAF in Nov 42 and used as a Liberator OTU, one of the giant bomber hangars can still be seen to the right in this photo. Post-war used as a collection point for the scrapping of many surplus RAAF aircraft.
