Tocumwal was once the largest aerodrome in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in record time in the dark days of February 1942 as a USAAF bomber base for the inland defence of Australia and named McIntyre Field, it originally covered 8 square miles. Taken over by the RAAF in Nov 42 and used as a Liberator OTU, one of the giant bomber hangars can still be seen to the right in this photo. Post-war used as a collection point for the scrapping of many surplus RAAF aircraft.
