Beautifully restored to the Blue Angels colours it wore with the team between 1967 and 1969 and keeping company with two other genuine aerobatic team aircraft alongside, a Thunderbirds F-4 and a Red Arrows Hawk. Prior to the refurbishment, it was displayed in the white colours in which it finished its career, used by Grumman as chase plane for another F-11 performing in-flight thrust reverser testing between 1973 and 1975

The USAF introduced the T-28 in 1950, the Navy following three years later. The Navy version of the aircraft, the T-28B, differed from the Air Force version primarily in having a bigger engine and a three-blade propeller instead of two-blade. The T-28C added a tail hook for carrier landing training and remained in service till 1984. This one served VT-3 then VT-6, NAS Whiting Field, FL from 1971 till being stored at DM from the end of 1974

In the early 1960s, a dozen F-8As were converted to DF-8F drone controllers for use on the Navy's various target ranges. This one retains the 1964 colours of Utility Squadron 8 (VU-8), NAS Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. The last of the Crusaders left navy service in 1987.

Although the Cougar retained the F9F designation that had been used by the Panther, it was a substantially new design, of which approaching 2,000 of several versions were built. This one started out as an F9F-8 delivered to the USN in September 1955 and after serving two fighter squadrons, was modified in 1957 to F9F-8B to carry nuclear weapons. After serving various attack squadrons, it was redesigned from AF-9J to TAF-9J in 1966 with VT-23 at NAAS Kingsville, TX, in whose marks it remains on display having been withdrawn from service in 1970

This is the prototype of the FJ-2 Fury, basically a navalised Sabre, as it appeared in 1956 during flight testing at NAS Columbus, OH. It later flew with NATC Patuxent River marked '151' and NARTU Glenview, IL as '7V-12'. Stored at NAS Glynco, GA from 1965

The B-50 entered service in 1947 with some 370 being built. As they were replaced by more modern equipment, many were converted for use as tankers by Tactical Air Command by the removal of armament and fitment of extra tankage in the fuselage and under the wings. To keep up with the increasing demands from the jets they were serving, the external tanks were replaced by two J47 turbojets. As such, they soldiered on well into the 1960s until fully replaced by KC-97s and moreover KC-135s

Nicknamed "The Whale" by its crews, the A-3 Skywarrior is the largest and heaviest aircraft ever designed for regular operation from an aircraft carrier. Although long since having lost their strategic bombing role, the Navy used electronic warfare and aerial tanker versions of the Skywarrior into the 1970s and a few remained in test programs as late as the 1990s. six A3D-1 bombers were converted to YA3D-1Q (YEA-3A) ECM aircraft with a pressurised crew compartment replacing the bomb bay. This one served the NATC at Patuxent River, MD

Displayed in the colours of VMJ-1, MCAS Atsugi, Japan, which operated this aircraft between February and June 1958. After briefly being placed in storage after withdrawal at Litchfield Park, AZ in October 1958, it was placed on show at various locations, at some stage the aircraft's original photoreconnaissance nose being replaced with the gun-equipped nose of a standard Banshee fighter. In 2012 it was loaned to Pima by the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

The FH-1 Phantom the first all-jet aircraft operated by the USN and USMC being delivered from 1947, but with the rapid progress of jet aircraft at the time, was already obsolete within a couple of years and was withdrawn from front-line service in 1949, although it carried on with the reserves till 1954, by which time the McDonnell FH-2 Banshee and Grumman F9F Panther had taken over. This example was unusual in that it went on to be civil registered as N4283A in 1966 with Progressive Aero as a trainer. Now restored in the colours it wore in service with VMF-122, MCAS Cherry Point, NC

After successful service in the Korean War, the F3D remained in service until 1970 as a trainer and electronic warfare aircraft. This one is in the marks of VMFT(N)-20 although it didn't serve that squadron, instead spending nearly all of its service career with various Navy units. Until repainted around 2010, it was displayed in original but dilapidated white Navy colours and 'NJ' tail code.

The Bolo was the USAAC's standard bomber in pre-war years and was based on the DC-2. Obsolete by the time the US entered the war in December 1941, several were modified as B-18B sub hunters. The last time I'd photographed this aircraft was in 1979, well before it was restored to USAAF colours. At that time it was under civil registration N66267 with scrubbed "Roberts Aircraft - Dusting Spraying - Boise Idaho" titles still visible on the natural metal fuselage. Now displayed in the 1942 marks of 25th Antisubmarine Wing, 4th Antisubmarine Sqdn, Langley AAF, VA
