The c/n 001 is not its original c/n which is unknown. Sometimes listed as c/n 172 which was once earmarked for conversion to a Lake Tahoe Special. A different airframe was chosen and c/n 172 still existed as a bare airframe in 2010. The Lake Tahoe Special was a conversion to a 405hp GM LS-6 Robinson V8 engine. N48VP sunk at Lake Shasta after hitting a hidden object while landing on January 21, 2011.

The Aermacchi M-346 Master is a military twin-engine transonic trainer aircraft. Originally co-developed with Yakovlev as the Yak/AEM-130, the partnership was dissolved in 2000 and Alenia Aermacchi proceeded to separately develop the M-346 Master, while Yakolev continued work on the Yakovlev Yak-130. The first flight of the M-346 was performed in 2004. The type is currently operated by the air forces of Italy, Israel, Singapore, and Poland. Since 2016 the manufacturer became Leonardo-Finmeccanica as Alenia Aermacchi merged into the new Finmeccanica, finally rebranded as Leonardo in 2017.

Short-field performance is where the STOL CH 701 aircraft truly excels: It is airborne in less than 120 feet of unprepared grass, or 90 feet of hard surface, at gross weight. Rotation is possible by the time full throttle setting is applied, and lift-off can begin at 25 mph (in ground effect, with no wind) - all within less than four seconds from stand still. Of course, any headwind shortens the time and distance required for take off.
