Nice hybrid

The 200th built F-106A Delta Dart is seen here on the flightline of Atlantic City Air National Guard Base (NJ). The Jersey Devils used this century fighter up to July 1988, after it was replaced by the F-16A/B. This 0034 was transferred to AMARC as AA FN0191 on 20 July 1988 and remained there up to 1 December 1992. The aircraft was selected for the QF-106A aerial target programme with the 82nd ATS/Det. With that unit it was shot down by a Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS), a Stinger, over one of the Holloman (NM) ranges on 8 November 1996.

The 141st Tactical Fighter Squadron, part of the 108th Tactical Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard, swapped from F-105D Thunderchief to F-4D Phantom in 1981. The Deltas were exchanged into F-4E Phantoms IIs in 1985. They operated the F-4E untill 1991 after which the Tiger unit (the badge shows a Great Bengal Tiger) transferred to the KC-135 Stratotanker and the unit was subsequently redesignated into the 141-st Air Refueling Squadron. Currently they still operate the KC-135R. This 68-0370 was transferred to the RoKAF in late 1991 as 80-370.

The 141th TFS had three different colorschemes in use during fall 1987, this most modern F-4E camo jacket named Egypt One, the older Lizard or European One camouflage and the old-style Vietnam colours. Nice to see those all on the McGuire flightline. This 68-0625 shows also the Tiger markings on the nose. The Great Bengal Tiger with orange and black markings playing with a German helmet and Iron Cross is the 141st squadron marking.

A visit to McGuire Air National Guard Base (NJ) in the fall of 1987 yield this fine Vietnam-style camouflaged F-4E. The aircraft was sold to the Republic of South Korea Air Force (RoKAF) in October 1991 as 80-401.

The 119th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS), part of the New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Interceptor Group and located at Atlantic City Air National Guard Base (NJ), was equipped with the F-106 Delta Dart since 1973. This Delta Dart became an aerial target with the 82d Aerial Targets Squadron at Tyndall and was shot down (unmanned) over the Gulf of Mexico on 18 April 1995.

The 119th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS), part of the New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Interceptor Group and located at Atlantic City Air National Guard Base (NJ), was equipped with the F-106 Delta Dart since 1973. The Jersey Devils transitioned into the F-106 and assumed the quick alert status the following year. The Aerospace Defense Command then came under TAC as the Air Defense Tactical Air Command (ADTAC), and then again changed to a numbered Air Force, in this case1st Air Force. During 1988, the unit transitioned into the F-16A/B Fighting Falcon.

A true century fighter, the F-106A Delta Dart, what a beautiful fighter it is. The Jersey Devils were one of the last squadrons operating the Dart before transitioning to F-16. This 59-0046 was converted to QF-106A aerial target after a period of storage at AMARC. It was destroyed over the Gulf of Mexico on 10 October 1996.

We decided to camp near Bruggen/Wildenrath for a week: we just had bad weather. Fortunately the Friday afternoon gave a bit of sunshine and a real Shackleton. This made up for the whole week!

VH-FCE was sold in Papua New Guinea as P2-IAJ in August 1994.
