Two out of four Douglas F5D Skylancers are still present today. This one, ex-BuNo 142350 is preserved with the Armstrong Space Museum in Wapakoneta (OH), the home town of first man on the moon Neil Armstrong. The type, a development from the Douglas F4D Skyray, was built to simulate the flight characteristics of a planned re-entry space vehicle. Neil Armstrong flew this aircraft in the early sixties.

This Gulfstream II was one of four used by NASA as a STA - Shuttle Training Aircraft, these slightly modified Gulfstream's could simulate Shuttle landings in order to train the pilots in landing a Space Shuttle. After the Space Shuttle program stopped N944NA was put on display at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB CA.

Serial 61-7956 heading for the runway of Edwards. It was bound for another flight in support of NASA research. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to enter the platform so full back light. Strikingly, a part of this Blackbird was used for creating a very fine watch from REC Watches, and since 1 August 2025, that watch (one of 1372 made) is now on my wrist (I have nr. 64, as I have special memories to that Blackbird (61-7964) which I pictured at Mildenhall, see AirHistory picture ID 191523).

Although the C-142 did not go into production, it foreshadowed future operational V/STOL transports such as the V-22 Osprey. Tested extensively by the US Army, Navy, Air Force and NASA, the XC-142A first transitioned from vertical take-off to level flight and back to vertical landing in January 1965 and could be flown from airspeeds of 35 mph backwards to 400 mph forwards. The aircraft seen here, the only example remaining out of five, was flown to the museum in 1970 and was one of many types kept outside until indoor accommodation was expanded sufficiently - my 1973 photo here

As a kid in the 1960s I can well remember being inspired by this extraordinary rocket-powered machine built to investigate the effects of hypersonic flight. In June 1962 this, the second of three X-15s, became the first aircraft to exceed Mach 5 after being air-dropped form its NB-52A mothership over Mud Lake, NV. In October 1967, after a fuselage stretch and addition of the large propellant tanks, it reached Mach 6.7, fastest of the three X-15s. In December 1968 the 200th X-15 flight was cancelled and 56-6671 went into storage till moved to the USAFM the following year

The commonality of serial with the lifting body behind is explained in my upload of the latter here - the X-24A underwent radical changes when rebuilt as the X-24B which flew 36 times between 1973 and 1975, making 12 gliding-only and 24 powered flights with gliding landings as part of the Space Shuttle development program. Each time, a NASA modified B-52 mothership launched the X-24B at 45,000 ft. It was moved to the USAFM in 1976

During WWII, Germany and the United States experimented with forward-swept wings, but both encountered problems with the metal wings bending dangerously at higher speeds. As stronger composite materials became available, the X-29 was developed to explore forward sweep, advanced materials, a forward-mounted canard elevator and a computerised flight control system. After successfully completing the test program, the X-29A on display (one of two built) was retired to the museum in late 1994

Nestled under the XB-70 is the X-1B, which was instrumented to study thermal heating during supersonic flight. In 1957 Neil Armstrong, then a NACA test pilot, tested the installation of a system of small reaction rockets used for directional control. Cracks in the fuel tanks finally grounded the rocket plane with the last of 27 flights being made in January 1958

Bell completed two tilt-rotor XV-3s and began hover tests in 1955. The first one was damaged beyond repair, but testing continued with the second aircraft. The first complete rotation from takeoff to horizontal flight and back took place in December 1958. After testing ended in 1965, the surviving XV-3 went on display at Fort Rucker, AL and later into storage. From 2004 it was restored by Bell Helicopter Textron and arrived at the museum in 2007
