Dutch 'Glenn Martins' over Malaya with, interestingly, one of only a few RAAF Wirraways sent there. The bombers are Martin 166, or 139 WH3, models with a single long 'glass house' canopy. M-556 was captured by the Japanese at Singapore in February 1942. On the right is M-551.

The only B-10 version still in existence is this model 139WA export version sold to the Argentine Navy in 1938 (their s/n 0080), and used for training ground crews as late as the 1960s; it was last used as a ground-training tool for Argentine engineering students at the "Jorge Newberry" National School of Technical Education, No. 1, in Buenos Aires. It was acquired by the USAF museum on 21 August 1970 and is now displayed restored in the markings of a B-10 from 1934.

Spectacular find in a Dutch colonial archive - a stereo colour slide taken at Andir, Java before the war. The NEI 'Glenn Martin' bombers were painted in the standard USAAC colour scheme until 1940. M-536, a WH-2 model, is in the background. Photo from: Tropenmuseum

The B-10 was the first all-metal monoplane bomber produced in quantity, featuring such innovations as retractable landing gear, a rotating gun turret and enclosed cockpits. This B-10 was an export version sold to Argentina in 1938 and is the only remaining example left of the type. In 1970 the Argentinian Govt. kindly donated the aeroplane for display at the National Museum of the USAF.

This exhibit space has changed slightly since my previous visit and so this time around a full plane shot was (almost) possible of the only remaining example of this type.
