The first one of four built, this Yak-36 was prototype vertical take-off and landing fighter design, it was the predecessor of the Yak-38 that went into series production. This example was a ground test vehicle and was added to the collection at Monino on 10 July 1967.

The Yak-36 'Freehand' was a Soviet technology demonstrator for a VTOL combat aircraft. Four prototypes were built, the first of which was used only for static testing. This is the second protoype but the first to get airborne and is now on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.
