A rare exhibit in this museum is an example of Kurt Tank's HF-24 design for India. The cost and lack of capability of the 147 Maruts built compared to contemporary aircraft were often criticised, although it acquitted itself relatively well in the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. All were withdrawn in the 1980s and 10 have been preserved. This example was previously in the hands of the Deutsches Museum Flugwerft at Schleissheim near Munich

HF-24 Marut is an Indian fighter-bomber aircraft, first Indian-developed jet aircraft, first Asian supersonic aircraft and first Asian jet fighter (outside Soviet Union) used in active service. The prototype was flown in 1961, and from 1967 the first serial aircraft entered service with HAL. The leading designer of the Marut was Kurt Tank, the constructor of the Focke-Wulf 190. Total 147 HF-24 were built and this airframe is probably the only one on display outside of India.

This Marut is perhaps the most interesting, and certainly unexpected, exhibit in this wonderful museum.

This rare bird moved from Oberschleissheim to Wernigerode, Saxony-Anhalt. Unfortunately it's just as difficult to photograph here. The surprising size of Kurt Tank's Indian jet fighter doesn't help - it's almost 16 m (52 ft) long.
