Originally registered XA-CUE, one of twelve Mexicana 727s with a modification allowing emergency use of a JATO rocket engine fitted under the fuselage at hot & high airports. This necessitated the repositioning of some avionics to the roof area, hence the unusual hump visible in this photo. After Mexican this aircraft became EI-BRF and N728ZV with Sun Country Airlines, joining Dan-Air in April 1986 and sold to Royal Aviation as C-GRYO in September 1993. Converted to freighter in 1997, to N15DF, then Transmile as 9M-TOM in 2001. Back to N15DF in 2004, stored at Roswell and later scrapped

An ex-Mexicana 727, previously XA-CUE. Note the unusual slightly raised roofline on the rear fuselage. This is a modification which was made to 12 of Mexicana's 727s, known unofficially as a 727-200/JATO. These aircraft were fitted with a solid-fuel rocket engine under the fuselage, strictly for emergency use only at hot/high airports. This necessitated the repositioning of some radio and electronic systems to a new equipment bay in the upper rear fuselage.
