The HD-1 was anticipated as a replacement in the French AF as a replacement for the Nieuport 17 but was thought inferior to the SPAD S.XII. Most of these unwanted aircraft went to Belgium but a few made it across the Atlantic to serve with the US Navy, some being converted to floatplanes.
