While simulating stalls at a relative low altitude, the crew encountered problems with both engines. After the left engine caught fire and then separated, the crew elected to make an emergency landing in an open field near Bergisch Gladbach, about 13 km north of Cologne Airport. The crew survived but the aircraft was destroyed.
