June/85: Placed on a barge and transported to the Battleship Alabama Memorial Park.

1956: TOS USAF and assigned to the 42nd Bomb Wing, Loring AFB, ME. Ca.1963: 22nd Bomb Wing, March AFB, CA and deployed for combat in Vietnam. Returned to USA to the 99th Bomb Wing, Westover AFB, MA and again deployed to Vietnam. Returned home to the 306th Bomb Wing, McCoy AFB, FL, and deployed with them to Vietnam, participating in Linebacker I and II in 1972. Returned to USA and assigned to 7th Bomb Wing, Carswell AFB, TX. 10/11/83: Ferried to Maxwell AFB, AL and was placed on display in their air park. It had flown 14,204 hours and over 300 combat missions.

Ca.1955: TOS USAF and assigned to the 93rd Bombardment (Heavy) Wing (SAC), Castle AFB, CA. 1/57: With two other B-52s, it made the first round-the-world flight for heavy bomber aircraft and were refueled by KC-97s. 1965: Flown to Wright Field, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, for display at the future Air Force Museum location at Wright Field. As one of the outside aircraft, it was opened for display in July 1971. 1978: Replaced by B-52D 56-0665 and removed from display. 1984: Scrapped by the museum. The nose section was eventually acquired by Walter Soplata for his collection in Newbury, OH.

First taking to the air in June of 1955, this B-52 began its illustrious, nearly 50-year USAF and NASA career as a bomb navigation system test airplane for the USAF's B-52 fleet. Ironically, test bomber spent most of its career dropping flight research vehicles rather than bombs. In 1959, it became one of two mothership launch aircraft for the X-15 program, which paved the way for America's early manned spaceflight efforts. Nicknamed "Double-0-Eight" and "Balls Eight" cut its teeth launching 106 of the 199 X-15 flights. At its retirement on 17 December 2004, Balls 8 was the oldest active B-52.

Assigned to the 416th Bombardment Wing stationed at Griffiss Air Force Base, NY. Retired at Davis-Monthan AFB in 1993 and scrapped in 2020.
