Landing from Hay River shortly after 8am as part of the Buffalo Air Express, providing overnight door to door delivery from major Alberta cities to communities in the NWT. Crew has the flaps up already before tailwheel touch-down, as is best practice in a taildragger. Airframe once delivered as 42-93263 and registered to Buffalo since December 1994.

'The Sked' arriving at Hay River, coinciding with the company president's near-daily commute home. Intended for the USAAF as 42-93423, the Douglas was instead taken on by the RAF as Dakota Mk. III KG602. Transferred as such to the RCAF in 1946, she became CC-129 12932 by 1970 and was put into storage in 1975. Buffalo bought her five years after that.

"Even in Yellowknife, everybody looks when a C-46 gets airborne"... The sound volume that goes with it may have to do with that! TXW is leaving in the morning on another Valley Run, packed with groceries and sundries. On the upper fuselage, just behind the cockpit door, the shade of its former RANSA titles is visible. That company operated her from 1955 until 1966.

This well-travelled 1969 amphibian was on the Canadian register as C-FTXC for some two years as of May 1996. She then went to the USA as N215NC and came back, to Buffalo, in May 2011 with the current reg. As shown, it still had the flag of North Carolina on the tail and the emblem of its Forest Service on the forward door. The aircraft is for sale.

A closer look at the nose art. The full text (all caps) reads: Captain Dickinson; Ed Force Three; C-47 RAF KG330; No. 512 Squadron; D-day June 6th 1944. Iron Maiden member Bruce Dickinson visited Buffalo and felt WZS deserved a name, having such a history. He decided on 'Ed Force Three' after the band's tourplane, that is in turn named after their mascot Eddie.

Famous insigna on PNR's nose. "Summer Wages" was a country song about loggers blowing their income on entertainment, thought fit by 'Buffalo' Joe for this plane as he spent all his money converting it for civil use. The story behind the small door being dubbed 'hamburger door' is a lot less poetic: it is named after what a person would become when opening it with the engine running...

One of the world's last DC-3 passenger cabins for scheduled service, a duty that PNR had been performing since Buffalo started it in August 1986. The service ended a few months after the photo date. Being able to examine these aircraft inside and out is part of the completely free tours that Buffalo offers, as Joe finds it important to share his affection for them with as many people as possible.

Functional is the keyword here, with a bit of new mixed in with the old and faithful. The captain's clipboard has a classic Winnipeg aerodrome chart as a background, and the copilot's shows the After Landing and Shutdown checklistst. As per those, the 'bungie cord' that ensures locking the ailerons against gust damage has been installed.

It's not just the reciprocating engines that need to be kept warm. This Beech started as D-IKOR and also was N88879 and N702JL.

Despite having a livery of its own, Buffalo's doctrine on the subject is 'If there is green in it, it will do'. The former G-LOFC has retained above scheme, complete with Atlantic Airlines logo and only the airline name changed. Parked here without props after being added to the fleet two years earlier, she went on flying cargo again later.

Brought into the hangar next day, to be prepared for the season. Was taken over (via Bombardier) in August 2010 from the Newfoundland and Labrador government, whose colours it still wears here. Ownership passed on to Longview Aviation in July 2017. This is a relatively new CL-215, built in 1987.

Arctic Explorer has been sitting in cold storage for years, after being acquired by Buffalo in May 2002. Before that, this C-54 was Tanker 12 as well but with Aero Union as N4994H. Officially still on record as CF-BAA, the 1945 airframe with over 22.000 hours is for sale.

CF-CUE once was the first aircraft landing on the runway of what is now the Yellowknife airport. She flew with the USAAF for just three years before becoming civil and was with Canadian Pacific from January 1947 until moving on to the Department of Transport in February 1956. There, she was retired in October 1990, to be taken on by Buffalo in 1992.

On August 19, 2013, WIR suffered a complex engine failure during take-off while also being unintentionally overloaded. Not even able to reach 200ft AGL, she came to a sliding stop short of a Yellowknife runway, luckily without injury to persons. Part of the resulting damage can be seen on the nose. Her career started as USAAF 42-23509 in 1943, then Czechoslovak government as OK-VAV and French air force, including combat duty again, as 23509. Went civil as F-WSGY and eventually, in 1975, became C-GWIR. Smoke jumper platform as well as combined passenger-freighter aircraft with Buffalo.

Another 'jet prop' with an interesting history, that is quite well documented on AirHistory. This one was delivered to TEAL in New Zealand in 1959. She had a number of US and Canadian operators from 1972 onwards, including Reeve Aleutian Airways. Undergoing continued work here on the conversion into airtanker. The paint scheme on the fuselage is still mostly following the Reeve livery but with different colours.
