Restoration was well underway in August 2002 when the SCFA suspended efforts due to the FAA's decision not to issue a standard airworthiness certificate as the result of 9/11. The aircraft was stripped of useful parts by SCFA, and later HARS, before being disassembled and moved to Bridgewater, Virginia, where it was stored in 2018.

Look at the damaged left wingtip. This occurred in January 2002 when sister-ship N67062 was being readied for a ferry flight to the March AFB Museum in Riverside, CA. One of N67062's main gear had sunk into the dirt and full power was applied to extract the aircraft. As the aircraft came out of the hole, the brakes malfunctioned and the No.4 prop sliced through the wingtip of N67040. The prop was changed and the ferry flight proceeded!

This is the result of a cylinder letting loose on a radial engine. It happened at the worst possible time on one of Avra Valley's relatively 'short' runways. The No.2 engine had been throttled back to simulate an engine failure. As we rotated after a 'touch and go' landing, the No.1 engine failed and, momentarily, both engines on the left side were producing little or no power. Captain Frank Lang brought the aircraft under control and we returned to Avra Valley Airport for a safe landing.
