In 2003 and 2004, the Government of Madagascar contracted at least two companies to carry out seismic surveys throughout the so called "red" island. FUGRO was one of them, which had this australian registered Aero Commander sent over to Madagascar. This very aircraft was built in 1970 and was on the australian register for all it's life, before being withdrawn from use in 2008 and consequently broken up. It spent a few years in Switzerland before being transferred to Madagascar, where it is stationed since 2004. In 2006, it was upgraded to the BA version by Panterra in Canada.

A nice surprise visitor to TNR was this German AF Challenger, one of seven operated by the GAF to transport ministers and high ranking military personnel between 1984 and 2011. This particular airframe was sold to Canadian operator Air Tindi in December 2011 and now carries registration C-FTDA. Five more aircraft were sold to civilian operators as well, while ex 1203 is now being operated by the Gambian AF as C5-AFT.

The two planes were said to have been overpriced and linked with some safety and EASA certification issues, Air Madagascar continues to struggle financially up to this day. As a counter measure, this airframe has been registered in Island as TF-EAB (from March 2013) and Air Atlanta did operate it on behalf of Air Madagascar. Parked at the time of upload.

Between 2001 and 2008, Sapphire Air from South Africa had a contract with the Government of Madagascar to maintain two Bell 407's on stand-by. Their duty was mainly to transport President Marc Ravalomanana and other officials around the island of Madagascar. Note the "Repoblikan 'i Madagasikara" titles applied above the cabin.

Between 2001 and 2008, Sapphire Air from South Africa had a contract with the Government of Madagascar to maintain two Bell 407's on stand-by. Their duty was mainly to transport President Marc Ravalomanana and other officials around the island of Madagascar. Note the "Repoblikan 'i Madagasikara" titles applied above the cabin.

On behalf of the US Government, the USAF operates a handful of Hurons for diplomatic duties. Those aircraft are assigned to various US Embassies around the world and are used to transport officials around in the corresponding regions. This Huron was assigned to the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya when this picture was taken and got grounded in Madagascar during an offical visit due to one of it's engines producing metal chips.

Air Hotel Group used this Cargo pod equipped Caravan to schuttle tourists to its own remote luxery resort (equipped with its own airstrip) located some 80km north-east of Mahajunga on Madagascar's westcoast. Tiko was the company of Marc Ravalomanana, a successful business man and Madagascar's president between 2002 and 2009. Tiko was active in the food industry, and from 2001 this CN235 was used to distribute the locally manufactured dairy prodcuts throughout Madagascar. However, being one of the oldest CN235, it encountered a lot of technical issues with its Garrett engines, and was therefore sold on to Presidental Airways in the US in 2006. Still active with AAR Airlift Group as N1269J at the time of upload. Tiko Air replaced 5R-MKM with an ATR-42 registered 5R-MJT.

Air Madagascar received a total of six Twin Otters (5R-MGA through 5R-MGF) between 1971 and 1976. 5R-MGF is seen here wearing the new Air Madagascar livery, introduced in 2003 at a time when Lufthansa Consulting was assisting the malagasy airline to re-launch it's operation after a political crisis in 2001/2002. In July of 2018, this airframe has been transferred to Tsaradia, the new domestic brand of Air Madagascar.

Air Madagascar received a total of six Twin Otters (5R-MGA through 5R-MGF) between 1971 and 1976. 5R-MGF is seen here wearing the new Air Madagascar livery, introduced in 2003 at a time when Lufthansa Consulting was assisting the malagasy airline to re-launch it's operation after a political crisis in 2001/2002. In July of 2018, this airframe has been transferred to Tsaradia, the new domestic brand of Air Madagascar.

A severe cyclone named "Gafilo" hit Madagascar in March 2004. South Africa offered help and airlifted four Oryx helicopters to Antananarivo. 1237 is seen here after being flown in by an IL-76, re-assembled and ready for a technical flight, before assisting the relief efforts throughout the island. A total of 50 Oryx helicopters were built for the SAAF by Atlas / Denel.
