The P-51 did not arrive in Sweden until towards the end of WWII when the Allies offered used aircraft to interested buyers. In three years, Sweden bought 161 Mustangs, designated J 26 in Flygvapnet service. From 1953, the Flygvapnet began to take the J 26 out of service but did not preserve any of the frames, rather all were sold to various countries. This example first served withe USAAF as 44-63992 and then with the Israeli DF as 2353. Israeli authorities later donated it for preservation and it now wears the same F 16/A markings as when delivered in April, 1945. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
