Among improvements to the first generation jet airliners was the turbo fan engine. In an answer to the Rolls - Royce Conway, Pratt & Whitney developed the JT3D. A version of the JT3C already in service, the older engine could also be upgraded to a JT3D during major overhaul. Quickly making a mark on the Boeing 707 fleets, Douglas also offered the engine for the DC-8s. The DC-8-50 series and DC-8-61 used the cowling pictured here and it is shown with the thrust reverser deployed. These were the days the jet exhaust and the fan air were directed forward. Aircraft is either CF-CPM or CF-CPT. This photo is copyright © Gary Vincent, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
