A Growler on the prowl... The crew of VX-9 Vampires out of China Lake was flying very low and fast through the narrow Canyon, a sight and sound I will never forget. This location for viewing military low level flying is comparable to the famous Mach Loop in Wales, however, it is not as busy as there but the chances for some sunshine are much better in California.
Photography jet fighters in their element while they pass fast and low gives you a true adrenaline kick. Their scream through the valley makes you almost forget that this is real military hardware, designed for combat missions. The plane you see was not designed as a model like you see on a fashion catwalk. The pilot inside is having a real tough time, manoeuvring his plane through the canyon: train as you fight, fight as you train! This Dutch F-35A of 323 Test and Evaluation Squadron (323 TES), based at Edwards AFB (CA), buzzed some photographer heads!
Low and fast through the Canyon. The flight instructor in the backseat is closely watching his student in this very low level environment. Unit is VFA-122 Flying Eagles out of NAS Lemoore. On this day the brown Hornet visited the Canyon on 3 different missions.
