Developed from the earlier Convair 116 ConvAirCar, conceived by Ted Hall, the Convair 118 was basically a car body supplied by Crosley with a detachable wing, Lycoming O-435 aero engine and tail unit. The prototype NX90850 first flew on 15 November 1947, but crashed three days later. It was rebuilt with a new car body, which is likely seen here as it was lighter in colour.
