A development of the well known F-84 series, this XF-84H Thunderscreech could well have been the loudest aircraft ever..... Intended to combine the speed of a jet with the long range, low fuel consumption and low landing speed of propeller-driven aircraft, the two XF-84H built made 12 flights in the mid-50s. Around 1958 this first one was preserved at Bakersfield (CA) with an electric motor to turn the prop. After restoration it went to the USAF Museum in 1999.

Not for nothing was this extraordinary offspring from the jet F-84F design known as the Thunderscreech, by some reckoning the loudest aircraft ever, apparently audible on startup 25 miles away! Intended to combine the speed of jets with the long range, low fuel consumption and low landing speed of propeller-driven aircraft, of the 12 flights made by the two XF-84Hs in 1955/56, 11 ended in emergency landings. Around 1958 this first one was pole-mounted at Bakersfield, CA with an electric motor to turn the prop. After restoration by the Ohio ANG it moved to the USAFM in 1999

The XF-84H was an experimental turboprop variant of the jet F-84 Thunderstreak. It was not a success! The aircraft has since moved to the USAF Museum at Dayton, Ohio.

Originally procured by the USAF as the XF-106 but redesignated XF-84H. The first of two conversions with 5850 eshp Allison XT-40A with supersonic airscrew and high-mounted tailplane. Now at the USAFM.
