The grim reality of war, MiG-21bis 17130 of the Yugoslav Air Force was shot down by Croatian forces near Slunj in early October 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence. It operated from Željava air base. The wreck of its aft fuselage is now on display at the Homeland War Museum in Turanj near Karlovac, alongside a Croatian MiG-21bis.

The Finnish Air Force used a number of Mig-21s as decoys for their reconnaissance Mig-21 bis/Ts. MG-77 was one of them and it was painted up to represent MG-127 which is also at the Karelian Aviation Museum.

In remembrance of heroes of the Soviet Union, Ismailbek Taranchiev and Alexei Tkachev, this MiG-21bis has been put on a pedestal at the Besh-Kungeyskaya Srednyaya Shkola. Besh-Kungoy was the birthplace of Taranchiev, who crashed their Il-2 into a German military column, after it was hit on the eastern front on 18 March 1944.
