As Flying Legends commemorated in 2010 the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain there were many Spitfires, Hurricanes and other WWII warbirds to be seen. For me, however, the chance to photograph this venerable piece of Britain's aviation heritage was certainly one of the show's highlights.

British air racing in the 1930s revolved around handicap formulas which made the little Mew Gull with its 200-hp Gipsy Six engine a winner. This replica was first flown in 2013.

This was the fifth of six Mew Gull racers to be completed. It won the 1938 Kings Cup at 236 mph flown by Alex Henshaw. It is seen at the 1953 event. After several crashes it is still airworthy in the Shuttleworth Collection.

Built in 1936, a piece of British Aviation Heritage. It was an all wooden racing aircraft, significant enough to be represented in the RAF Museum with a replica though this is the real thing.
