This 109 was built as a E-1 in 1939 and fought in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. After upgrade to E-7 it was delivered to the Eastern Front and flown by Wulf-Dietrich Widowitz (36 victories). On 4th April 1942 Widowitz was shot down by a Hurricane and forced to make an emergency (but near perfect) landing on a frozen lake. The aircraft eventually sank through the ice and remained on the lake bed until recovery in 2003. It is pictured here awaiting restoration at the Planes of Fame museum

This was the last of seven Mig 29s to land at Edinburgh for a fuel stop on their way to the States via Keflavik. This being a Bank Holiday there were about 30 cars parked to watch these fighters arrive and this pilot was checking us out as he went past.

An important early aircraft was the Taube (Dove) designed by Igo Etrich, an Austrian. It was built in many variations by a dozen German companies, Jeannin Fllugzeugbau from Berlin - Johannisthal producing the Stahltaube with a a steel tube fuselage frame. Unmanoeuvrable, the Taube proved vulnerable as a warplane.

The Horten Ho-229 (often called Gotha Go-229 due to the identity of the chosen manufacturer) was a German prototype fighter/bomber design approved by Göring late in WWII and is recognised as the first pure flying wing powered by jet engines. This is the only surviving Ho 229 airframe, the V3, and is now awaiting restoration at the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Note the that T2-490 code was attributed by the Office of Air Force Intelligence after arrival in the US.

Flying into retirement on 16 October 2012, this Transall landed short of the runway here and bounced across the road in the background - check out the video. Onward road transport to the aviation museum in Wernigerode, 50 km away, never happened. Transall 5101, the 'Silver Goose', also landed here in December 2017, destined to go to Wernigerode instead.
